James D'Ley - Interview

The BPM show at the NEC this year was a first for me and as soon as I walked in the door I heard this sound from the Allen and Heath stand.  I walked over to find a face I didn't know playing some of the coolest music, using the XONE controller to the max.  His skills had me hooked and I advise you all go check him out.

The free download and video say it all but I couldn't miss out on writing something about this young man.  After watching him perform he then went on to spread his love for the music and technology he uses by talking to people on the Allen & Heath stand about the controller he uses and how he performs with it.  A great advert for the DJ World and it shows how James is very passionate about what he does.

After meeting him in the shop just outside the NEC, we chatted and I was lucky enough to get his contact details and this interview.

Ladies and Gentlemen we are proud to introduce you all to James D'Ley.

F1. How long have you been Djing?
JD. Hey, how you all doing :) Ive been DJing for about 12 years roughly I think, round about when I left school was when I first discovered decks & vinyl properly

F1. How did you get into djing?
JD. It was a school mate that first showed me a pair of decks, I then started exploring dance music in all its glory and it had me hooked. It was a couple of years later at an event called Homelands ( legendary in its day ) that I got fully bit by the bug that is being an electronic artist. It was two acts in particular, Black strobe LIVE followed by Plump DJs in front of 5k plus.. The way they had the crowd captivated to their every breath & the vibe they injected just had me hooked , to this day, I've not had too many experiences like it .I quickly bought a pair of Numark direct drives & started practising hard ( really hard, about 12 hours a day for two years, got my first residency & the rest as they is history :)

F1. What equipment do you use?
JD. Currently I have two different setups when I'm out.. If I'm doing a XONE set ( which is something i pushing atm) my setup is a Allen & heath Xone DB;2 mixer with 2 Xone K2 controllers.. If I'm doing my normal thing , its the DB:2 mixer with three Pioneer cd'js, but as the XONE show becomes more popular, I'm finding myself making that inevitable switch quicker than i had anticipated :)

F1. What style of music would you say you play?
JD. Electronic music with dominant bass & groove. I switch though genres & tempos like they went out of fashion , the tunes themselves are vessells for me creating a new sound out of an existing one.

F1. Favorite Dj at the moment?
JD. Ohh tricky tricky one .. Skism is & always has been one of my favourite DJ's throughout his various guises over the years. He goes in so hard .. EZ is another one that gets my pulses going when i see him on a lineup. Going back a bit, the likes of Zabelia,Eddie Halliwell & Steve Lawler do it for me on a technical level.

F1. What label do you find the most exciting at the moment?
JD. The label I'm signed to, Funkatech records. You should go check them out .. www.funkatech.com

F1. Where can people see you play in the future? (we advise you check this guy out)
JD. Best thing to do is come check my artist page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/DleyJamesDJ?ref=hl) or the page on Funkatech - , I try to put my dates up there as regularly as possible.. I have quite a few shows in London between now & xmas, but from end of October, I'm off on my travels, touring Asia for Halloween, then Dubai, & fingers crossed Germany also. Ill be celebrating new year in Australia playing a few shows.. so yeah, I'm busy busy, always great to see new faces at shows so come down :)

F1. What is your guilty pleaseure when it comes to music?
JD. I don't really feel guilty about anything i like to be honest, although I'm sure plenty of my mates probably think that i should in some instances. I  was brought up on 80's rock & electro pop so i have plenty of hidden beauties haha :)

F1. Where do you see the future going technology wise for Dj's?
JD. Tough one .. I see it going the way it is already going to be honest. The barriers of what format you use and how much that matters are starting to break down. And I think that's a good thing, now that various mediums aren't reserved for specific levels or types of an artists everyone can be individual ( or strive to be ) and the music should become the priority again ..

F1. Thanks for your time James, please check out his soundcloud page http://soundcloud.com/jamesdley and this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdudSEP-DsU of James doing his thing.  We wish you all the best in the future and hope to see you soon in club rocking the floor.
JD. Nice one guys, pleasure to catch up with you . Hopefully see some of you at a show soon !

Phunky Rabbit Records - Interview

F1. Anyone that knows us and follows the podcasts will understand our love for this label.  Phunky Rabbit Records. As always you stumble across the most superb finds when least expected.  I met record label boss Malc East through a radio show I listen to on Gravity Fm, Global House Sessions, search itunes for the podcast, it's one not be missed.  After a few messages we got on the promo list and never looked back.  Every tune seems to get played on our podcasts so this label is doing something right.
So how did it all start?

PR. Well the idea started to form the label was between myself and Bjarne Sorum who is a house producer from Norway. We wanted an outlet for our own music plus wanted to give other new producers a chance to put their material out. We also got a lot of established producers on board as well. The label was invented late 2011 but it wasnt until May 2012 that it was launched. Bjarne left the label after a few months so i now run it single handed.

F1. How many artists do you have onthe label?
PR. I have round about 50 from well established to new comers.

F1. What new artists do you have lined for later in the year?

PR. I have some interesting artists from South Africa coming up with new vocalists also waiting in the wings. Some really interesting stuff coming up. Also a collaboration with Epoque Music (Mike Evans) where i will be releasing some of their artists tracks.

F1. Where can everyone buy and download the tunes on your label?
PR. Well the packages can be bought from all download stores but 95% of my sales are through Traxsource.
F1. Whats your favorite tune of all time.

PR. Wow i really couldnt commit to one there are so many.

F1. Whats your favorite label at the moment?

PR. Again that is a hard one. Obviously the big ones like defected but if i had to really pick one i love the stuff Reel People Music put out.

F1. Who is your favorite Dj?

PR. Haha again now you are asking me. Where do you start ... so many good DJs about.

F1. You also produce tracks, how long have you been doing this and what new tracks do you have out?

PR. I have been producing and releasing house tracks under my Placidic Dream guise for over 5 years now. I have not done as much production as i would have liked this year as i have been so busy with the label. You can catch my releases here. I hope to be able to find more time for production in 2014.

F1. Are you a Football or Golf man?
PR. Football. Manchester United all the way.

F1. Thanks for the time Malc in answering our questions.  We wish you all the sucess and growth with the label.  As always full support from F1 Djs.

PR. Hey thanks Matt and all your DJs for your support. I will continue to scout about for the best material for you guys. It is all about the music.
I would like to add that i am setting up a sub label called Phunky Pig for mainly Tech and Deep house which will be run by Tim Wright.

Whiiite and Cold Blank have both found homes doing steady remix work for mega dance label Ultra Records.  This week Whiiite drops a blistering electro house remix for Ultra's premier dystopian dance rebels Black Boots, and their insanely catchy new single "Streetwalker." Whiiite and the members of Black Boots have been friends for many years, so it seems only fitting that a collaboration between the two finally occur.

Cold Blank have been busting out track after track, remix after remix in the studio as of late, and they show no signs of stopping!  Their latest on Ultra is a remix of rising stars Brass Knuckles and their latest track featuring John Ryan, "As Long As I'm Alive."  Already charting on the Beatport Progressive House Top 100 Chart, this is some of their best work to date!

Cold Blank also dropped an electro heater this week for their good friends Cyberpunkers on Freakz Me Out Records.  Extremely grateful that Cyberpunkers remixed their Agenda track "Deception," Cold Blank decided to return the favor and assembled a dark and dirty remix of Cyberpunkers' new track "Mad Armada."

Rise At Night, the new collaborative project between famed MC Messinian and bass prodigy Kezwik, just dropped its first EP today on Datsik's Firepower Records.  Whiiite is on remix duties for the track "Lady Killa," and he does not disappoint!  A staple in Whiiite's sets for months now, he is thrilled to finally release this heavy bass monster for his fans.  Fans should also keep their eyes peeled, the first issue of the Whiiite graphic novel will finally be unleashed upon the world this month!

It's been a quick minute since Cold Blank released their last original tracks in the form of their chart-topping album The Agenda, but the time has now come for the boys in suits to start unleashing the pile of tracks they've been busy working on in the studio.  The first of these is their blistering new electro-house banger "Drop Bears," out now via their own Burn The Fire imprint.  Produced during their recent two week stint in Australia, this track's title will cause any Aussie to chuckle.  To anyone who doesn't understand the reference, well let's just say you should be sure to keep your eyes up and on the trees if you ever happen to find yourself in Australia, the Drop Bears might be coming to get you!

Hysteria is back with another anthem for the masses with "Springen," the new single from young superstar DJ / producer MAKJ, which drops Monday June 24th on Beatport.
MAKJ is the next in the line to deliver Hysteria a banger! At 22 years old, MAKJ has already shared the stage with Avicii, Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner, and more. His originals, remixes and bootlegs have been supported by Bingo Players, Hardwell, Tiësto, Afrojack, Nicky Romero and more, and we are confident many more will be supporting MAKJ after the release of "Springen."
Debuted by Bingo Players at ULTRA 2013, "Springen" delivers on all fronts. The record starts with a build full of urgency, giving way to a deep, Dutch-inspired drop. If the low frequencies of the drop don't move you, then the piercing synth stabs layered above surely will.

HARDISCO RECORDS THE INTERVIEW - MALKIN FRITZ

HARDISCO RECORDS (www.hardiscorecords.com/)

I first heard of Hardisco records when I came across a young man on mixcloud called Malkin Fritz.  The mix he had done took my breath away and after a short chat on Facebook I posted the mix on this blog.  Malkin Fritz has agreed to be the first ever interview on our blog and excitement in the F1 Djs Blog camp is ready to explode.

Interview

F1. Malkin who's idea was it to start the label?
MF. Well, a few years ago I was talking to my friends that it would be great to open  our own label, and to present our own sounds and tunes. With my friends from the label, Kalson and Rave Charles, we managed to revive what we talked about for years. So, Hardisco Records is now open and the work it's going full steam.

F1. What was the last record you remember buying?
MF. The last thing I touched was the Daft Punk "Random Access Memories" and "Soul Clap pres. Dancing on the Charles compilation" on Soul Clap Records.

F1. How many years have you been Djing?
MF. To the date, there will be 4 years.

F1. When did you start to make music?
MF. I started when i was 18. Before that, i always wanted to make my own sounds. I thought it was too expensive, but my friend show to me Ableton and Cubase. I was stoned when i saw the possibilities! All that plug-ins and EQ's, i was like "Wow, I finally found something".
In the beginning, my music sounded disastrous. I didn't know how to convey my emotions in digital format. I was desperate! Then things changed after a while. Every day, I made music and trained myself to achieve what I want. Today, my technical side is much better than in the beginning. (laughing)

F1. Whats next for Harddisco Records (any new releases)
MF. We are currently working on my new EP called "Malkin Fritz - The Run" that will appear on all platforms at June 2013. The whole package contains two original tracks and five remixes. It will be a real summer refreshment for fans of pop and disco sound.
Full year we planned, so you can expect more variety of music and compilations on Hardisco Records.

F1. Who's your favourite Dj/Producer at the moment?
MF. I think that will be Modeselektor and Apparat (Moderat). These people work such a thing as called quality!

F1. Are you a Vodka or Whiskey man?
MF. Well, this is a nice question! (laugh) I always prefer whiskey, but sometimes i miss the Vodka. On the stage, it does not matter! (laughing)

F1. What equipment do you use when Djing?
MF. I have long used Ableton Live connected to the controller. But sometimes, it can be crashed couse of the power of the USB port. And that is not good for the crowd! (laughing)
Today, I only work on Serato. CDJ players, controller or a turntables. It doesn't matter. Just need to connected to Serato.

F1. The Summerize Mixtape is my favourite mixtape of the year so far and its made me go and get some of the tunes you played.  Can you tell us of any artists we need to look out for in the future.
MF. Yes, of course! First, big thank you for your support on "Summerize"! The artists that I really like are Leeno, Soul Clap, Alex Metric, Moderat, Mickey, Oliver, Nick Monaco, Boston Bun, Squarepusher, Synkro, Armand Van Helden, Surkin, Arcadion etc. You have so much labels that provide good music. Mullet Records, Dominance Electricity, Turbo , Record Makers, Soul Clap , Marble etc.

F1. Malkin thanks for your time answering the questions and we look forward to posting more of your mixtapes and tracks in the future.
Hardisco records have the full support of the F1djs Blog and we wish all involved the best success, just keep the music coming and we will post it.
MF. It's my pleasure that I did an interview for F1 DJ's!
Cheers!

WHIIITE Signs to Circle Talent Agency

Since his inception in May of 2012, Los Angeles-based producer, WHIIITE, has had an outstanding year, and to add to his growing list of accolades, this week the mysterious artist joins the likes of Datsik, Flux Pavilion, DJ Fresh, and many more on Circle Talent Agency’s lauded talent roster.

Circle Talent Agency boasts one of the most impressive artist rosters in dance music, with 175+ acts and a strong majority of Bass artists. Whiiite is excited to be a part of the Circle family, saying “I've been a fan of a number of their artists for years and was very impressed by how well they handled large scale production shows. Felt like it was a perfect fit for the Whiiite project.”

With a recent milestone of 20K fans on Facebook and an unprecedented graphic novel forthcoming to accompany Whiiite’s debut productions, it seems like this connection with Circle Talent Agency couldn’t have come at a better time.

Expect to see Whiiite touring in a city near you soon…

About Whiiite:
One night while leaving nightclub venue Avalon in Hollywood, professional DJ/Producer Chris White was kidnapped by a mysterious terrorist cell and taken to a remote lab where he was experimented on by a mysterious group of scientists.  When the experiment seemingly failed leaving Chris lifeless, the terrorist cell took his body and dumped it at a nearby beach. However, shortly thereafter he awoke from sure death gazing thru new eyes as Whiiite. Whiiite discovered he had new powers bestowed upon him, the ability to control and manipulate the very sounds he had always been surrounded by in the nightclub circuit.  Enabled by these new powers Whiiite got fast to work in his lab creating devastating original hit songs such as "Broken," "Houdini," and "Torment," as well as huge remixes for Arty & Chris James, Rusko & Cypress Hill, Nelly Furtado, Skylar Grey, Calvertron, Cold Blank, and many more.  As his powers grew and his ability to contain them decreased, he desperately needed an outlet through which to unleash this growing energy, so he took to the stage and unleashed his abilities upon the world.  Having already shared the stage with the likes of Rusko, Jack Beats, Zedd & Porter Robinson, Dillon Francis, Caspa and more, Whiiite's live performances quickly captivated audiences with their theatricality, orchestration and devastating bass.  While the exact nature of Whiiite and the purpose and goals that drive him may remain a mystery for now, one thing is certain, Whiiite and the powers that live within him have the ability to ignite dance floors like nothing that has ever been seen before....

Missy Elliot - I'm Really Hot (whiiite rmx)

Just in time for the weekend, Whiiite has decided to unleash a real sizzler!  This trap take on Missy Elliot's classic "I'm Really Hot" has been a long time coming for Whiiite.  He sites Missy's productions as one of his biggest influences as a producer, and having long wanted to find a way to work this song into his sets, he finally sat down and twerked it Whiiite-style so that it fits perfectly into any bass-driven set.
While you're checking out this heater, also take a glance at the cover art for the premier issue of Whiiite's comic book series The Birth of Whiiite, as well as a comic cell from the second issue that depicts Whiiite surround buy some mysterious villains and creatures.
